Carlaz 2019 Prima Terra Walter De Battè
Carlaz 2019 by Prima Terra – Walter De Battè is a remarkable white wine that embodies the authentic spirit of Ligurian winemaking. It comes from a native grape variety grown on the chalky soils of Carrara, at about 150 meters above sea level, on the same geological formation that gave birth to the area’s famous marble quarries. The result is a wine deeply rooted in its terroir, shaped by the sea breeze and the rugged hills that separate Liguria from Tuscany.
The winemaking process begins with a four-day skin maceration, allowing the must to extract complexity and character from the grapes. The wine then matures for two years on fine lees, with regular bâtonnage, a technique that enriches its texture and enhances aromatic depth.
In the glass, Carlaz reveals a bright golden-yellow color. The nose opens with notes of wild herbs, asparagus, seaweed, flint and a gentle touch of sulfur, reflecting the maritime influence and mineral richness of its origin. On the palate, it’s tense and vibrant, with a fine balance between freshness, salinity and texture. The finish is long, savory, and deeply mineral, evoking the sea and the rocky terrain from which it comes.
Behind this wine is Walter De Battè, one of the key figures in Ligurian viticulture and founder of the Primaterra project, dedicated to supporting local growers and preserving the identity of small terroirs. With vineyards spread between Lunigiana and the UNESCO-listed Cinque Terre, De Battè crafts wines that are both contemporary and true to their roots — expressive, elegant, and deeply connected to the land.
Carlaz 2019 is more than just a white wine: it’s a sensory journey through the Ligurian coast, with its sea air, sun-drenched slopes, and timeless beauty. Perfect to pair with seafood dishes, shellfish, vegetable risottos, or soft cheeses, it’s also an ideal wine for meditation and reflection.
