Vernaccia di San Gimignano “Carato” 2018 Montenidoli
The Vernaccia di San Gimignano DOCG “Carato” by Montenidoli is a conscious return to the historical roots of Vernaccia, interpreted with precision and modern awareness. Wood fermentation recalls ancient Etruscan and medieval winemaking traditions, while the Burgundy-inspired approach, explicitly referenced by the estate, results in a white wine of remarkable structure, depth and ageing potential.
Produced exclusively from 100% Vernaccia grapes grown under certified organic farming (ICEA), it comes from hillside vineyards in San Gimignano, located at around 350 metres above sea level, on calcareous soils with marine sediments. These conditions provide minerality, tension and aromatic definition. Vines are trained in cordon spur pruning, with a density of 5,500 vines per hectare, ensuring low yields and high concentration.
Vinification begins with free-run juice, fermented in barriques, followed by 12 months of ageing in oak and an extended bottle ageing of at least 24 months, which enhances balance, complexity and aromatic depth. In the glass, it shows a deep straw-yellow colour. The nose reveals lemon blossom, jasmine and delicate spicy nuances, while the palate is full-bodied, savoury and persistent, with citrus notes and a long, harmonious finish.
The Vernaccia “Carato” by Montenidoli is a wine for true connoisseurs, outstanding with aged cheeses, yet equally compelling at the end of a meal as an elegant alternative to a great red. One of the most authoritative and long-lived expressions of Vernaccia di San Gimignano.
