Sauternes “Haut Placey” by Château Roumieu is a prestigious sweet wine from the Sauternes appellation in Bordeaux, France. The name “Roumieu” refers to a historic plot of the estate, as well as a term once used by the Moors to describe Christian pilgrims walking the route to Santiago de Compostela—an evocative symbol of tradition, identity, and journey, just like this extraordinary wine.
This part of Bordeaux enjoys a rare microclimate: the meeting of the cool Ciron River with the warmer Garonne creates early morning mists that are ideal for the development of Botrytis cinerea, the famous “noble rot.” This natural process concentrates sugars and aromas in the grapes, creating the rich complexity that defines true Sauternes.
Grapes are hand-harvested with great precision, selecting only bunches or even individual berries affected by noble rot. Fermentation is carried out under strict temperature control to preserve a perfect balance between sweetness and freshness.
In the glass, Sauternes “Haut Placey” reveals a deep golden hue, offering intense aromas of dried apricots, honey, candied orange peel, and sweet spices. The palate is full, silky, and well-structured, with a vibrant acidity that supports and balances the natural sweetness.
