L'ORATOIRE DES PAPES
Founded in 1880 in the heart of the Rhône Valley, L’Oratoire des Papes is a benchmark producer in the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation. Its name comes from a small 18th-century oratory still present among the vines, dedicated to Saint Mark, patron saint of winemakers. The iconic Art Deco label, created in 1926, remains a symbol of authenticity and heritage for wine lovers and collectors alike.
Under the guidance of technical director Edouard Guerin, the vineyards are farmed organically using agroecological practices: hand-grafting, massal selection, natural compost from local livestock, spontaneous cover crops, and sheep grazing to nourish and protect the soil without disrupting its natural layers.
The white wines of L’Oratoire des Papes express the elegance of calcareous and safre soils, showcasing freshness and minerality. Grapes are hand-harvested and gently pressed whole-bunch in a Champagne-style press for 7 to 8 hours, resulting in pure, vibrant juice. Fermentation and aging take place in tulip-shaped concrete vats and French oak barrels to enhance aromatic complexity.
The red wines, dominated by Grenache, are crafted from vines planted across the four great terroirs of Châteauneuf-du-Pape: rolled pebbles (galets roulés), red sandstone, limestone, and safres. Co-fermentation of grapes from different soils reveals the nuanced character of each terroir, balancing richness, silkiness, and depth. Aging in large oak foudres and concrete vats ensures natural stability and age-worthiness.
L’Oratoire des Papes continues to honor its legacy while embracing sustainable innovation, offering wines that embody the true soul of Châteauneuf-du-Pape.
