DonnaLia is a young winery from Piedmont, born from the desire to revive and preserve the deep-rooted winemaking tradition of Salussola, a small village in the Canavese area. The project aims to rediscover the authentic agricultural and cultural identity of a land that has been producing wine since ancient times. Historical sources, including Donato Donati’s 1934 thesis in Economic Geography, reveal that in the 19th century Salussola had over 300 hectares of vineyards, supplying the Biella and Vercelli areas. The San Secondo hamlet, where DonnaLia is based today, was already renowned in Roman times for its vines and fertile soil.

Located within the Canavese DOC, the estate lies on the southern slopes of a spectacular glacial moraine amphitheatre, shaped thousands of years ago by the great Dora Baltea glacier. This unique geological formation, flanked by the Serra d’Ivrea and the Canavese hills, provides ideal conditions for viticulture: mineral-rich soils, balanced humidity, and a temperate climate influenced by nearby lakes and mountain breezes.

The winery is based in Villa Cà Bianca, a historic residence built in 1710 by the Avogadro di Casanova family as a private oratory dedicated to Saint Teresa. Carefully restored, it still preserves its small bell tower and underground icehouse—remnants of an era when community and agriculture were one. The villa and estate were later owned by Cavaliere Silvio Sardi, entrepreneur, war hero, and mayor of Salussola, whose visionary leadership helped modernize the region. The winery’s name, DonnaLia, pays tribute to his wife Lia, a woman of strength and grace whose spirit continues to inspire the project.

Every DonnaLia wine is a dialogue between past and future, combining the authenticity of tradition with a modern, elegant approach to winemaking. It embodies the soul of Piedmont—its history, its people, and its deep connection to the land—turning every bottle into a testament to rebirth, identity, and passion.
