The estate owes much of its identity to the region’s exceptional Turonian limestone, clay and tuffeau soils, geological formations that have long made Saumur one of France’s finest terroirs for both Chenin Blanc and Cabernet Franc. Rich in fossilised limestone, these soils provide outstanding drainage and impart the hallmark freshness, mineral tension and ageing potential that distinguish the domaine’s wines.
Today, Domaine de l’Enchantoir covers 17 hectares of vineyards planted with the traditional grape varieties of the Saumur appellation: Chenin Blanc, Chardonnay and Cabernet Franc. Vineyard management follows certified organic farming, officially recognised by Ecocert since 2016, with practices designed to preserve biodiversity, protect soil health and allow each parcel to express its own unique character.
Winemaking takes place within the estate’s historic courtyard, a remarkable heritage site where traditional craftsmanship meets modern precision. One of the domaine’s defining features is its network of ancient troglodyte cellars, carved directly into the limestone beneath the Enchantoir hillside. These underground galleries provide naturally stable temperatures and humidity, creating ideal conditions for the maturation and ageing of the wines.
All wines produced by the estate carry the Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée designation, including the prestigious Saumur Puy-Notre-Dame AOC, officially recognised in 2008 as one of the Loire’s finest appellations for Cabernet Franc. Strict production regulations, low yields and mandatory ageing requirements ensure wines of exceptional structure, elegance and longevity.
