Pinotage 2018 Fleur du Cap
The Fleur du Cap Pinotage 2018 is a fine example of South Africa’s signature grape variety, crafted through meticulous winemaking and careful vineyard selection. The grapes come from the renowned Cape Coastal region, specifically from vineyards located around the Bottelary Hills, planted between 1987 and 1997. These vineyards include both bush vines and trellised vines, rooted in soils of decomposed shale and granite, which provide the wine with remarkable complexity and depth.
Harvesting is carried out by hand to ensure that only perfectly ripe grapes are selected. After destemming, the must undergoes a five-day cold soak at 10°C, a process that enhances aromatic intensity and ensures balanced extraction. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature of 25°C, preserving the bright fruit character. Pump-overs are performed to extract color and tannins, while avoiding harshness. Natural malolactic fermentation follows, adding roundness and smoothness to the wine’s structure.
The maturation process lasts for 12 months in a mix of second and third-fill French and American oak barrels, which impart subtle spice and toasted notes without overpowering the varietal expression of Pinotage.
In the glass, it shows a deep red color with violet tinges. The nose opens with ripe plums, blackberries and cassis, followed by hints of vanilla and oak spice. The palate is full-bodied, robust and well-structured, with ripe fruit flavors supported by velvety tannins and a fresh acidity that brings balance. The finish is long, persistent and delicately spiced, leaving an elegant impression.
This Pinotage is a versatile companion for a wide range of dishes: it pairs beautifully with grilled meats, lamb, poultry and pork roasts. It is also excellent with South African classics like Bobotie and Malay Curries, as well as with spicy international cuisine such as Mexican food. A wine that perfectly reflects Fleur du Cap’s philosophy: passion, innovation and the pursuit of true varietal character.
