Morgon 2023 Jean Foillard
The Morgon 2023 from Jean Foillard is one of the most authentic and iconic expressions of Beaujolais, showcasing the full potential of the Gamay grape from the renowned Morgon cru, where it reaches remarkable depth and complexity.
Jean Foillard is widely regarded as a pioneer of natural winemaking in France. Since his first vintage in 1982, he has followed a bold and uncompromising philosophy: no chemical inputs in vineyard or cellar, spontaneous fermentations, and minimal intervention. His work has been deeply influenced by legendary figures such as Marcel Lapierre and Jules Chauvet, key contributors to the revival of Beaujolais.
The grapes come from approximately 11 hectares of vineyards in Morgon, farmed sustainably with only copper and sulfur treatments. The soils, rich in manganese and schist, play a crucial role in shaping the wine’s mineral character and aromatic complexity.
Winemaking follows local tradition with cold semi-carbonic maceration and spontaneous fermentation using indigenous yeasts. The wine is aged for about 5 months in used oak barrels, preserving fruit purity and terroir expression.
In the glass, it shows a bright ruby red color. The nose is expressive and layered, offering aromas of ripe red fruits (cherry, raspberry), kirsch, along with balsamic, spicy, and mineral notes, with hints of graphite and incense.
On the palate, it is juicy, fresh, and vibrant, with elegant structure and silky, well-integrated tannins. The lively acidity and saline finish enhance its length and drinkability.
The Morgon 2023 by Foillard is highly versatile, pairing well with charcuterie, poultry, white meats, traditional dishes, and cheeses, or enjoyed on its own for its pure, effortless drinkability.
A benchmark Beaujolais, combining authenticity, finesse, and exceptional value.
