Monleale 2019 Vignaioli Battegazzore
Monleale by Vignaioli Battegazzore is a deep and refined expression of Barbera from the historic Monleale subzone of the Colli Tortonesi, in the Piedmont region. This wine is the result of a passionate revival of family winemaking traditions by Bruno Battegazzore, an architect turned vintner, who crafts wines from small, sustainably managed plots scattered around the hills of Mombisaggio. Each vineyard, with its own name and story, brings a distinct personality to the final blend.
Made exclusively from Barbera grapes, fermented with native yeasts, Monleale is aged in wood according to the traditional rules that govern the appellation. This slow maturation process enhances both the wine’s structure and its capacity for ageing. In the glass it shows an intense garnet red color. The bouquet is rich and complex, with layers of dark cherry in alcohol, prune, bitter chocolate, and hints of balsamic herbs, forest floor and spices.
On the palate, Monleale is full-bodied and velvety, with a vibrant freshness that lifts the richness of the fruit. The tannins are smooth and well-integrated, adding depth and elegance. This is a wine of character and authenticity, perfectly capturing the essence of the Tortona hills and the thoughtful craftsmanship of its producer.
A versatile and food-friendly wine, ideal with hearty dishes such as meat ragù risottos, braised or grilled red meats, game, and aged cheeses. Best served at around 14 °C, it’s a Barbera that balances tradition and innovation, power and grace – a must-try for lovers of Italian reds.
