Lupicaia 2018 by Castello del Terriccio is one of the most representative wines of Tuscany, offering a compelling interpretation of its terroir through a balance of structure, elegance and aromatic complexity. Produced at the Castello del Terriccio estate on the Tuscan coast, it comes from vineyards located approximately 120 metres above sea level, with south and south-west-facing exposures. Here, the Mediterranean climate plays a key role in the gradual ripening of the grapes.
The blend brings together 90% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Petit Verdot, two varieties vinified separately to preserve their individual character. Fermentation takes place at controlled temperatures, followed by extended maceration: 20 days for Cabernet Sauvignon and 16 days for Petit Verdot. This careful approach allows each grape variety to contribute depth, aromatic definition and structure to the final wine.
The wine then matures for 24 months in French oak tonneaux, followed by a further 12 months in bottle. This extended ageing process encourages the integration of the tannins and the development of a more complex aromatic profile.
In the glass, Lupicaia 2018 displays an intense ruby-red colour. The nose unfolds with notes of ripe wild berries, complemented by elegant spices and subtle balsamic hints. The palate is broad and enveloping, with considerable structure, finely integrated tannins and a refreshing mineral undertone. The finish is persistent, revealing depth and balance.
The name Lupicaia comes from a stream on the estate where wolves were once spotted. A reference to the surrounding landscape that reflects the wine's deep connection with its origins. A distinctive Tuscan red wine, combining international character with a strong sense of place.
