Chambave Muscat Passito “Prieuré” 2017 La Crotta di Vegneron
The Chambave Muscat Passito “Prieuré” 2017 by La Crotta di Vegneron is one of the most iconic dessert wines from the Aosta Valley, a true expression of alpine sweetness and finesse. Produced from 100% White Muscat grapes, grown on steep, sandy, moraine-based slopes between 450 and 680 meters above sea level, this wine reflects the perfect balance between richness, aromatic intensity and vibrant mountain freshness.
Its legacy dates back to the 13th century, when the Chambave Muscat Passito was already celebrated as a noble nectar. Historical records tell that in 1494, Giorgio di Challant, a prominent Aosta Valley nobleman, offered it to King Charles VIII of France. The name “Prieuré” (meaning priory in French) honors the region’s monastic traditions and centuries-old devotion to fine winemaking.
Harvesting is done manually and selectively, picking only the best clusters, which are then left to dry naturally for 60–70 days in ventilated drying rooms. After a 36–48-hour cold maceration, the must undergoes fermentation in stainless steel tanks at controlled temperature, followed by 12 months of maturation on fine lees with regular bâtonnage to enhance roundness and complexity.
In the glass, it shines with a deep golden color. The bouquet is intense and seductive, offering notes of yellow peach, violet, acacia, sage, honey and sweet almond. On the palate, it’s velvety and full-bodied, with a harmonious balance between sweetness and freshness, and a long, persistent finish that leaves behind elegant honeyed and floral impressions.
A masterful dessert wine, ideal with pastries, fruit tarts, blue cheeses or foie gras, but also perfect for meditation, enjoyed slowly to appreciate its richness, history and timeless grace.
