THIERRY GERMAIN
The work of Thierry Germain is rooted in a direct, daily connection with the vineyard, guided by both instinctive sensitivity and rigorous technical discipline. Based in Varrains, one of the most prestigious areas of the Saumur-Champigny appellation, Germain has built since 1993 one of the most respected estates in contemporary Loire winemaking: Domaine des Roches Neuves.
His philosophy is entirely based on biodynamic viticulture, applied consistently with deep respect for natural cycles, soil vitality and biodiversity. The estate is divided into around thirty distinct vineyard parcels, each farmed by hand and vinified separately. This approach allows every terroir expression to be preserved and highlighted, turning each parcel into a precise narrative voice within the domaine’s portfolio.
Yields are deliberately kept very low, already below the regional average, and in some selections reduced to around 15 hectolitres per hectare, reflecting a clear commitment to quality over quantity. This strict selection in the vineyard translates into meticulous work in the cellar, where precision and purity take priority over intervention.
Each parcel is vinified separately according to its origin, allowing full expression of its identity. From this philosophy emerge some of the estate’s most emblematic cuvées, including Terres Chaudes, Clos de l’Échelier, Les Mémoires, Franc de Pied, Outre Terre, L’Insolite and Clos Romanée, each with its own personality while remaining consistent with a unified stylistic vision.
The wines of Thierry Germain are immediately recognisable: bright, tense, elegant and deeply mineral, defined by crystalline fruit expression and a clear sense of place. With time in bottle, they develop remarkable complexity and reveal an ageing potential that is often underestimated.
More than a winemaker, Thierry Germain is an interpreter of the Loire landscape. His work balances sensitivity and discipline, observation and restraint, with the constant aim of translating terroir into wine without unnecessary mediation. The result is one of the purest and most coherent expressions of Cabernet Franc and Chenin Blanc in the world today.
