FINCHER & CO

fincher & Co WinesFincher & Co, alternative wines from Nuova Zelanda

The New Zealand winery Ficher & Co has a clearly defined style: producing wines from the best New Zealand grapes and vinifying them in a way that respects the characteristics of the terroir: bottles that represent an alternative, yet recognisable expression of Marlborough and Central Otago.

These two areas, the most famous in New Zealand for wine production, are respectively famous for the production of Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir. Ficher & Co's aim is to highlight the different characteristics that these grapes can show if they come from different terroirs. To this end, they produce wine from single vineyards from which the best grapes are selected, which are then treated with minimal intervention and extremely respectful of the terroir, whose character will be rediscovered in the wine.

Behind this company is the work of two people: winemaker Liam Steevenson who in 2004 became the world's youngest Master of Wine passing the exam at the first time. He set up and founded one of the UK's leading independent wine merchants, was a senior wine buyer for supermarket Waitrose and in 2017 was named as one of the top 4 achievers in the international wine industry. Liam has wine projects in France, Spain, New Zealand and India.

Ben Glover is one of New Zealand's most influential winemakers with over 20 years' experience. He has been the chief winemaker for Mud House, Wither Hills and his family winery Zephyr. His wines are recognisable by a smooth and elegant style.

Marlborough is the area where the best Sauvignon Blanc in the world is produced, thanks to the maritime climate that guarantees a long and constant season during the grape ripening cycle, characterised however by large temperature swings between day and night that enhance the aromatic range of Sauvignon Blanc, which like nowhere else in the world are able to display an incredible aromatic spectrum ranging from citrus fruits to aromatic herbs, from exotic fruits to persuasive herbaceous notes. The Sauvignon Blancs produced by Ficher & Co, coming from an area a little cooler than Marlborough, have lower residual sugar levels than the norm, so they have less tropical fruit, a more elegant and European style
