Emidio Pepe: natural wines since 1964
Emidio Pepe winery is a wonderful family business capable of imposing itself during the years as one of the best wineries of Italy. Its history began at the end of the nineteenth century when Emidio, grandfather of the current owner, founded the winery in the hills of Torano, in the province of Teramo, convinced of the excellence of the terroir located halfway between the Adriatic Sea and Gran Sasso, which with a mild and ventilated microclimate and good temperature ranges, is perfect for the two typical Abruzzese grapes: Trebbiano and Montepulciano.
There are four generations which followed one another at the head of the winery, in 1944 it was the turn of the son Giuseppe who became famous for the high quality of his bulk wine, twenty years later, the grandson of the founder, his namesake and current owner, started bottling making Emidio Pepe wines known also outside the region.
Since 1964 the winery in Torano is a reference point for the high quality and the extreme longevity of its Abruzzo's wines, thanks to the constant work of Emidio and his wife Rosa, who, since some years, are supported by their daughters Daniela and Sofia, as well as their granddaughter Chiara, in order to carry on the secrets and the centenarian history of this great family of producers.
The winery has almost since the beginning worked by following the way of organic farming, well before the current certification, once again underlining the innovative and pioneering capacity of Emidio. Today Pepe winery has switched from organic farming to biodynamic farming, limiting any kind of intervention in the vineyard and in the cellar, Emidio Pepe's Montepulciano d'Abruzzo and his Trebbiano are produced in a completely natural way, without using selected yeasts or any other compound other than copper crystals, sulfur or biodynamic preparations. Vinification and aging take place strictly in cement.
This wonderful family business has had the great merit of keeping a very high quality level during the years, vintage after vintage Emidio Pepe's wine perfectly represents the fantastic terroir of Abruzzo.
