Description

Orvieto Secco Bio “Tragugnano” 2019 Sergio Mottura

The Sergio Mottura Orvieto Secco Bio “Tragugnano” 2019 is one of the most authoritative and identity-driven expressions of the Orvieto DOC, clearly positioned among the most authentic and age-worthy versions of the appellation.

The name “Tragugnano” refers to a strict selection of the estate’s best grapes, sourced from the most mature and best-exposed vineyards. The blend is composed of 50% Procanico and 50% Grechetto, vinified separately and assembled only at the final stage to preserve the pure expression of each variety.

The vineyards are located in Civitella d’Agliano, in Lazio, at the southern edge of the Orvieto DOC, in a landscape shaped by volcanic soils from the Vulsini complex and the Lake Bolsena area. The soils, composed of 40% clay, 40% sand, and 20% silt, create a natural balance between structure, tension, and aromatic finesse.

Viticulture is highly selective, with yields reduced to around 55 quintals per hectare. Harvesting is entirely manual and staggered: Grechetto is picked in early September, while Procanico follows in early October. Only the best parcels and oldest vines contribute to the final blend.

In the cellar, winemaking is essential yet precise: gentle pressing, static settling, and fermentation in stainless steel, followed by about 6 months of aging on fine lees in steel tanks. This approach enhances structure while preserving aromatic clarity.

On the nose, the wine shows white fruit, aromatic herbs, and mineral nuances, evolving continuously in the glass. On the palate, it is defined by freshness, savoriness, and long persistence, with greater depth and complexity than the standard Orvieto.

This is a top-tier expression of the appellation, with an aging potential exceeding 15 years, during which it develops further complexity and nuance.

“Tragugnano” is not an immediate Orvieto; it is a more reflective, vertical, and narrative-driven interpretation of the territory, designed for those who seek not only drinkability, but also identity, depth, and historical memory.
