Vacqueyras Reserve 2012 from Château des Tours is a full-bodied blend of Syrah and Grenache from the Vacqueyras appellation in the southern Rhône Valley. This estate is owned and managed by Emmanuel Raynaud, the winemaker of the iconic Château Rayas. The estate's Vacqueyras is produced from organically farmed vines and typically consists of 80% Grenache and 20% Syrah.
Vacqueyras is the flagship wine of Château des Tours. Often, the question arises as to why it's not, like Château Rayas, based entirely on Grenache. The answer lies in the fact that the Vacqueyras appellation is subject to one of the strictest sets of rules. The maximum yield per hectare is limited to 36 hl/ha, and the grape composition (at least 50% Grenache and at least 20% Syrah/Mourvèdre) was clearly defined when Vacqueyras was upgraded from Côtes du Rhône-Villages to Cru in 1990.
The grapes used for this wine come from carefully selected vineyards, cultivated with agricultural techniques that respect the surrounding environment. The terroir of Vacqueyras, characterized by clayey and limestone soils, gives the wine a complex structure and distinctive character.
The production techniques at Château des Tours are steeped in tradition, with careful winemaking aimed at maximizing the qualities of the grapes. After manual harvesting and meticulous grape selection, the grapes are destemmed and gently pressed to extract the must. Fermentation takes place in concrete or stainless steel tanks at controlled temperatures to preserve the freshness and aromatic complexity of the grapes.
