Ristorante Cavallo Scosso in Asti by Emanuele Spagnuolo 26/08/2018
We are in Asti, we wanted to try this place after seeing a well done website and having read a good review on the Espresso guide. The pictures of the dishes intrigued us.
The location is not very lucky, we are outside the center of Asti, it is inside as a small residential complex and the impression coming down from the car is not to enter a restaurant, but in a residential structure. Inside the environment is a bit 'anonymous, halfway between the modern and some classic element.
It is an informal environment, but not very warm and a little anonymous.
Waiters in the norm, not smiling, but no mistake or rudeness.
Wine list on Ipad, but very limited choice with very few bottles outside Italy and also in the national territory very conventional wines without any curious label or research result.
We opt for a Walter Massa Derthona 2016: good!
We choose two plates for each person plus a dessert.
The dishes are well made especially the "Carnaroli Risotto with Bloody Mary, burrata, mullet and anchovy sauce". Even the "Black egg ... fried egg yolk, Raschera fondue and tomato confit drops" is well done although both do not come to levels of true emotions.
Same line with the second dish "Panko Bread Catch and Beetroot Mayonnaise": good in texture and taste, but something is missing to make the jump.
Desserts well studied, perhaps here we have arrived a bit higher and the "Chocolate is passion" keeps the promises without ever being heavy, which is not easy in a sweet 100% chocolate. From here it is understood that the chef has good hand in the kitchen and good ideas.
Overall, the kitchen is on its way even if there is still work to get to really thrill, but the real problem of the room is the environment that is anonymous and without soul. To improve and change the wine list that drives away an audience of fans and absolutely avoid serving as an aperitif offered a charmat method of Cocchi really unpresentable. At that point it is better not to offer anything if you want to aim at a clientele of attentive people with a well-trained palate.
Excellent reception for those who have dogs, have been nice motions bringing even drink for them.
You spend about € 20 for appetizers and first, € 25/30 for the latter, € 10 for desserts. Menu for € 40, € 50 and € 70
To try again.
