Loire Wines

The Loire Valley, besides being one of the largest French regions, is also one of the most interesting wine areas thanks to the particular characteristics of its terroir.

In spite of its wide and varied wine production, Loire wines are particularly famous for their white varieties based on Sauvignon and Chenin Blanc. As for the red Loire wines, we can’t count the production of Cabernet Franc and Gamay.

Finally, the wine production of Loire is particularly counted for Muscadet, a particular white wine produced with Melon de Bourgogne, perfect in combination with crustaceans.

The Loire wines and their terroirs

The Loire Wines express their incredible particularity thanks to the weather conditions of the region itself and the influences with which the river of the same name has affected the terroir of this area.

The climate to which the vines are subjected and, consequently, the wines of the Loire is unique because it is rather cool even in those months when the other areas of France are more sultry.

Because of its latitude the cool temperatures of the area bring the vines almost to the limit of their survival, this means that the grapes ripen with a particularly low sugar content.

The Loire wines are for this reason mainly dry, light, not very alcoholic but characterized by a marked acidity that gives them a pleasant freshness often combined with the important mineral content that characterizes its terroir.

In addition, the Loire wines are traditionally aged in barriques (despite numerous exceptions) that make them robust with obvious toasty notes.

The Loire Grapevines

Loire wines are mainly based on white grapes, a type of wine that makes this wine region famous, among which Sauvignon Blanc, Chenin Blanc, Melon de Bourgogne, Arbois, Chardonnay and Folle Blanche in particular.

Black grapes include Cabernet Franc, Gamay, Grolleau, Pinot noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec (known in the region as Cot), Pineau d'Aunis and Pinot Meunier.
