Calabria

Calabria boasts an ancient winemaking tradition, probably earlier than the Greek one, and the production is mainly oriented towards red wines. The most cultivated grape of the region is the Gaglioppo, a red grape of sure interest and of sure potential, with which the most famous wines of Calabria are produced: the Cirò Rosso and the Savuto. Among the other red grapes we find Magliocco Canino, Nerello Cappuccio and Aglianico.

Among the white grapes of the region, present in smaller quantities, we find the Greco Bianco, with which the excellent "Greco di Bianco" is produced, the Malvasia Bianca and the Mantonico.

In Calabria there are about 10,000 hectares of vineyards, in a region where less than 10% of the surface is flat. About 50% of the surface is hilly and more than 40% mountain. The vineyards are consequently found mostly in the hills (50%) or in the mountains (42%).

Calabria has an impervious and difficult territory, which makes it extremely fascinating from a landscape point of view. Surrounded by the Tyrrhenian and Ionian seas, it is characterized by the narrow valleys and mountains that divide it in two and create different climatic conditions between the Ionian and the Tyrrhenian sides. In many areas of Calabria the vineyards have terraces.
