The Vineyards of Burgundy, an extraordinary cooperative construction between Nature and Man with over 27 centuries of history

The Burgundy wines are among the best oenological products in the world, recognized for the high quality that characterizes them and for the variety of wines that are produced despite being based, practically, on only 2 large vineyards in particular: Pinot Noir for Burgundy red wines, Chardonnay for Burgundy white wines together, sometimes, Aligotè.

The Burgundy , in French Bourgogne , is a patch of land located 230 km from Paris in the area of Central France consisting of 4 departments: Yonne, Cote-d'Or, Saône-et-Loire.

The Denominations of Burgundy Wines and their Legislation

The legislation regarding the name of the wines of Burgundy dates back to 1395 by the Duke Filippo II of Borgogna, to then be finalized in 1919 with the emanation of the " Judicial Procedures for Protection of the Denominations of Origin "and it reaches intact nowadays based on the same principle of then: the preservation and exaltation of the specific organoleptic properties that characterize the terroir proper of a certain municipality or climat.

From the pyramidal base to absolute excellence we have:

Regional Appellation or Regional Denomination , which represents the basic level of Burgundy wines and reports on label the simple name Bourgogne Rouge or Bourgogne Blanc .

Villages or Communal Denomination , whose wine name is taken from the village of origin of the grapes and that, to respect the denomination, must eg be produced in purity.

Premiere Crus , the name for which the label shows, in addition to the geographical area of origin, the exact climat , that is a specific well-defined and outlined vineyard plot characterized by precise organoleptic and mineral properties of the territory.

Grand Crus , the highest step of the qualitative scale that does not follow the principles behind the legislation of Burgundy wines , as the Grand Crus are in their own right and do not represent in any way the territorial properties of the municipalities they belong to.
