Gaja wines

È nel 1937 che Giovanni Gaja pone il suo cognome a lettere rosse sulle etichette dei suoi vini dando il via alla Cantina Gaja che oggi conosciamo.

Based in Barbaresco, in the Langhe heart of the great Piedmontese wines, it was under the guidance of his nephew Angelo Gaja that in 1961 the Gaja Winery began to expand with the purchase of numerous fine vineyards.

Angelo Gaja was a great experimenter and pioneer: he was the first winemaker of Cantina Gaja to make wine from single vineyard producing first Gaja Sorì San Lorenzo in 1967, Gaja Sorì Tildin in 1970 and Gaja Costa Russi in 1978.

Angelo Gaja was the first winemaker to introduce malolactic fermentation in Piedmont, and he is the one who pushed the Gaja Winery to international fame thanks to products strongly linked to the terroir of origin such as Barbaresco Gaja (now particularly sought-after Barbaresco Gaja 2010) and Barolo Gaja and refused his son's proposal to plant French varieties deciding to remain closely linked to Piedmontese winemaking traditions.

Angelo Gaja: King of Barbaresco

Angelo Gaja, defined by critics as the "King of Barbaresco" and "the man who drags Piedmont into the modern world", was the first winemaker to bring malolactic fermentation to Piedmont and the one who revolutionized its winemaking techniques while maintaining a very strong link with the tradition of the territory.

Barbaresco Gaja is considered a status symbol in the sector, like Chateau Lafite-Rotshild or Krug.

Angelo Gaja is an innovator like his father Giovanni, the first founder of Cantina Gaja, who firmly refused to plant French grapes (Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Cabernet Sauvignon) because according to him the wine was one and only one: red and necessarily coming from native and local grapes.

But Cantina Gaja did not stop exclusively to the exaltation of Piedmontese enological tradition, deciding to found a parallel reality exclusively dedicated to the importation and distribution of enological products coming from all over the world (together with wine accessories): Gaja Distribution.

Gaja Distribuzione was perhaps created to clearly separate two distinct realities: the Gaja Winery, which by vocation and family tradition has always been dedicated to spreading the greatness of Piedmont's wines, and Gaja Distribuzione, which imports and distributes the pearls of the international oenological sector.
